Tonight everyone is reporting that Obama will not sign an executive order to enact a federal contractor ENDA until after the elections if he signs one at all. All of the gay blogs are atwitter with this news, but still say we need to support Obama in the next elections. Whenever I hear this I wonder why?
Why do we keep supporting a party that takes us for granted and does just enough to keep us happy, but not enough that we can get out from under their control? Obama has done just enough to maintain the majority of the gay vote by repealing DADT and stopping the justice department’s defense of DOMA. But we are still under the Democrat’s fingers because we do not have ENDA, we do not have the right to marry, we do not have a lot of the equal rights we deserve.
I argue we should vote against the Democrats to send a message. If you want our support you have to truly support us. Two or three things every four years is not enough, we want it now. By no means am I advocating that we vote Republican. Instead I suggest we pick one of the other independent parties and throw the weight of our community behind that party.
Yes, this will hurt us in the short term as it means the Republicans will gain control. But in the long term I think it sends a message to the Democrats. If you want our vote, you support us completely. If the Democrats are smart they would immediately start fighting full heartedly for full equality to win back our vote.
But I fear many of the loud voices in our community are afraid to do this. They are afraid they may upset the Democrats and lose all of their support. They are also afraid that if the Republicans take control we will roll back to the dark ages. My response? The Democrats need our support and will fight to get us back. This fighting will hinder the Republicans ability to roll back the successes we have made so far. Yes, we will probable lose some of the advances we have made so far, but the short term loss is a long term gain.
